I don't know if I'll be there.

We just had our democracy turn to facism. Can't we focus a bit on that?

Sure, education, clean elections, katrina, gay rights, the environment and everything else is important. But we're talking about torture and getting rid of habeus corpus.

Why can't the left just once have a FOCUSED protest? I really don't think it's going to do a damn thing to stand on the commons and complain about every single problem.

Check the "Sound Familiar" link, under "links".

It will be about Fascism. Trust me.

About when will the protest leave?
I hope I won't show up just after everybody leaves, but with my train getting to North Station at 5:10 that might happen...

The protest will leave the Common, and move to street corners, at approx 6:30 PM. We will protest all night long and return to the Common at 7:00 AM, and go on till 12:00 noon.

It's a 24 hour deal....

Are pets allowed? I rescued my animal companion from an abusive home and she cannot be left alone. I want to make the rally but my first responsibility is to my friend.

Of COURSE Marcy!
As long as you clean up after them and they don't bite.

Where are all the people? Can it be that everyone is sleeping through this--an unnatural disaster worse than Katrina, than the tsunami, concieved of by the neo-cons, rallied to by even the good Republicans and allowed by the Democrats?

I am thunderstruck that it's so quiet out there. We have no Richter Scale to measure this, no isobars to tell us the kind of danger we are in--is it true that we won't believe it's happening unless we see it on TV?

How can Americans not see that this Torture Act is the worst thing that could have been perpetrated on us?

It boggles the mind. First that this unitary President was handed his limitless power by our elected representatives--and then, that hardly a murmur was heard in the land.

I'm coming to the protest because it is one way to show my outrage.

Thank you, world can't wait.

She certainly does not bite, at least not when she's treated with love. And she requires less clean up than a lot of humans I know, lol.

Thanks, John. I'll be the one with the cane wearing a red Louisville Slugger baseball jacket.

I wrote twelve friends and asked them to meet me- or if they couldn't, could they make a call, write a letter or send a check to one of our causes? Everyone is going to do something.

Can everyone who reads this blog ask ten friends to show up or do something toward turning the bastards out? It's only a little, but it's not nothing. It's doable.

Thank you.

Till then... Pass it on..

I've been flyering all over Rhode Island College campus for 2 days now. I hope it helps get people out... if not for the Boston event, then for the Providence one.
I'll be there!

Much like Melissa expressed, honestly I'm concerned about the turn out, because with all I have done (flyering, posting to multiple forums, etc...) it seems very much like no one I have told would have otherwise become aware of it.

Has anyone seen if the local papers mention this today?

This event has the potential to re-shape global thinking... but only if people show up!
I really hope the "masses" are "massive" in number!

The middle class is roped in with debt. Most are slaves to their jobs and credit cards. I know if you rally on a weekday it shows a high level of outrage and commitment. But can we hold something on a weekend to get more people coming together to share and learn from each other?

I shed Jewish tears in the name of suffering Palestinians.

I am an American Jew but you can call me Israeli if you like.

I'm assuming in the eyes of many here, I am already taken for an assassin.

It hurt me tremendously to see a speaker verbally lambaste at the Israelis as a single entity as well as a few people holding signs saying "Israel get out of the Middle East"

Yes, i grant you that Israel has erred in many ways. But to solely point at us and attempting to edge us out of the planet without compromise wont bring coexistence in the middle east.

What about the other side? Sure they don't cause much harm at this point but what about the partition plan in 1947? Who declared war in 1948? Why were we forced into war in 1967? It was the vainglorious UN who gave us a "permit" to live within our ancient country. And when you call us imperialists or colonialists you actually lose all ground. How do we compare to Australians wiping out aboriginess and Americans wiping out Native Americans? We have a history with this land!! We deserve, to at least share it. We built our culture which by the way gave light to yours. And by the way gave light to Islam. We created a set of guided principles (whether you believe in G-d or not) that until today western society in some adapted way emulates. And now you want us out of our land/ country (no bigger than New Jersey)!!!

I am here to protest the Neo-Conservative's attempt to hegemonize the world through its plan for a new american century. But fuck you if you want me out of my land.

I went out to the protest today at the commons because I believe indeed our government is turning into a theocracy. I also fear Israeli policy drifted towards religion post-67 and I am very much antagonistic towards the settlements in the west bank. And so are more than 50% of Israelis... and that is why we voted for disengagement of gaza last year and most of us do want to pull-out of the west bank. Of course we have our religious fanatics who want to keep it.. but the majority wants out!

I seek coexistence with Palestinians. Reparation for refugees.. Check out Onevoice movement by the way...
But what I saw was not an attempt to make reconciliation between tribes. I saw racism. I think anti-Israeli rhetoric in its extremes, when its uncompromising, borders anti-semitism. Lets not forget it, it might still exist within some..

Can the extreme left take a stance to amelliorate the situation rather than just blast on one side simply because it is a leftist tendency to side with the underdog? I am pro israeli but i am also pro-Palestinian! i WANT all the west bank for them! End of occupation! Release of prisoners.. but the violence must end on the other side as well..

Please just delve into the issue more.. listen to the other side...
Give coexsistence a chance..I cant say peace because in that I dont have any faith.. dont alienate an entire population. dont push me away from this movement..

Welcome David

We all need to come together and understand each other. I heard a little audio from nyc rally. When a speaker was condemning Israel you could hear a crowd booing. The host then asked the crowd to be considerate of all speakers. It would have been nice to hear "I know there are people with different views here". "It’s promising that we can gather such a diverse group to come for the common goal to make this a better world by first addressing bush. Sometimes I use the generic label Israel when I mean Israeli government. They have committed atrocities that get people spinning and blame the people of Israel. That would be like saying we should blame all of us for bushes war in Iraq or the pedophilia the republicans condone. We would be to blame if we didn't speak out. I have heard some inspiring stories how hard some Jews are fighting for peace and harmony with their neighbors and Palestinians with the Jews. We need to get government out of the way of the people. Then we can see we all need and desire the same basics. We need a secure home, healthy food a loving family and neighborhood and life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness. Let’s break down the obstacles keeping us apart so we can come together and build the world into a beautiful place for all humans, animals, plants etc.,

P.S. any other stories how the rally is going.

To those who support this cause:
I am impressed with your committment and drive to get your words heard. It is nice to see young people attempting to get their voices heard.
However, I will end my post here as I completely disagree with your ideas and stance. It is my thought that as you grow older and learn a little more about the real world as opposed to the sheltered one you currently live in, you will see your views change a little bit about security and the dangers we face.
At the same time, keep fighting for equal rights and fair view for all people.
